An angsty, youth anthem “never knew we were living in a world with a mind that can be so small” – youth will take over the 21st century. “Anthem For The Year 2000” was a tremendous undertaking pinning the millennium to a song title and then producing something that closely resembles what they were shooting for you. There’s plenty of that post-grunge sound that made them popular in the first place in Australia and then America. It’s got him on his knees again just like he was positioned in “Emotion Sickness”. It sounds like a beautiful love song but it’s about Daniel’s anorexia which occurred after the last album. “Ana’s Song (Open Fire)” opens with the ominous pun “Please die Ana, for as long as you’re here, we’re not” and the animosity continues from there. Daniel Johns feels nausea swallowing the bitter pill in this song about avoiding the travails of pills. That sound expansion starts immediately when “Emotion Sickness” strings crash in like the orchestral opening of “Tonight Tonight” by the Smashing Pumpkins. ![]() rock scene in 1999, Silverchair went the other opening and expanding their sound. The band had painted themselves in a post grunge corner and while nu-metal began taking over the U.S. There’s a lot packed into these songs and the band’s sudden change to unpredictability meant you may have songs that go from hard rock instantly to orchestrated pop and vice versa. ![]() Silverchair’s transitional album which makes for an unexpected adventure.
